Model 40 Dataspeed (c1980)
The first series of combined electronic CRT and high speed printer
terminals produced by Teletype Corporation. These units worked very well
with less maintenance than would be expected. the down side of these products
was their large (and heavy) size, high current and heat dissipation. (not
to mention the high pricing). The model 40 DataSpeeds were networked in
many different applications through the use of "Cluster controllers" and
digital data service units. The trademarked term "DataSpeed" originated
with a series of high speed paper tape terminals that sent and received
oil-treated punched paper tape at the chad producing rate of 1050 words
per minute.
